Description
Delicious small puff bites made with cheese, perfect as appetizers or snacks.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives (for garnish)
- Sour cream or dipping sauce of choice (optional)
Instructions
-
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Boil Water and Butter: In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
-
Add Flour: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and add the flour all at once. Stir vigorously until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
-
Cool the Dough: Remove the pan from heat and allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes. This will prevent the eggs from cooking when added.
-
Incorporate Eggs: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until the dough is smooth and glossy.
-
Mix in Cheese and Spices: Stir in the grated cheddar cheese, black pepper, and paprika until well combined.
-
Pipe or Scoop Dough: Transfer the dough into a piping bag or use a couple of spoons to drop small mounds onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
-
Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the puffs are golden brown and puffed.
-
Cool Slightly: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly on a wire rack.
-
Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with chopped chives and serve warm with a side of sour cream or your preferred dipping sauce.
Notes
- Consistency: Ensure the dough is not too runny or too thick. It should hold its shape when piped or spooned onto the baking sheet.
- Flavor Variation: Feel free to enhance the flavor by adding herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough.
- Cheese Options: Try experimenting with different cheeses like Gruyere or Parmesan for a different taste.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes to restore crispness.
