Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup water
- 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 8 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
- Ribbon for decoration (optional)
Instructions
- Make the Churros: In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, salt, and vegetable oil. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in flour until mixture forms a ball. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or deep skillet to 375°F (190°C). Pipe strips of dough into hot oil using a piping bag. Fry until golden brown. Mix 1/2 cup sugar with cinnamon. Roll churros in the mixture.
- Bake the Chocolate Cake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a large bowl, mix flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans to cool completely.
- Prepare Chocolate Ganache: In a saucepan, heat cream until just about to boil. Remove from heat and add chocolate. Let stand for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth. Cool to room temperature.
- Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of ganache on top. Place the second cake layer over the ganache and spread more ganache over the top and sides. Press churros around the sides of the cake. Pipe remaining ganache and any leftover cinnamon mixture on top for decoration.
Notes
- Ensure the churros are fully cooled before rolling them in the sugar mixture to prevent clumping.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of cayenne to the chocolate ganache.
- Make sure the cake layers are completely cooled before assembly to prevent the ganache from melting.
